Distance Education Is The Baby Of The 2020/2021 School Year

Distance Education Is The Baby Of The 2020/2021 School Year: This is the key announcement, Prof Nalova Lyonga, Minister of Secondary Education, made to the Education Community during the ceremony marking the solemn pedagogic resumption and the official launch of the 2020/2021 school year.

On the occasion, all top-ranking officials of the Ministry, including the Secretary-General, Prof  Fabien Nkot, the Inspector General of Education (IGE), Prof  Nsata Awoundja, the Inspector General of Services (IGS), Mr. Akat Fidelis, all Directors, and Regional Delegates gathered around the Minister of Secondary Education at Government Bilingual Technical High School Nkolbisson, on Wednesday, 23 September 2020.

The 2020/2021 school year

As the Education Community braces up for the 2020/2021 school year, the Ministry of Secondary Education had to follow a longstanding tradition which is to provide both the balance sheet of the ending school year and the guidelines for the successful conduct of the upcoming one.

The balance Sheet

As regards the balance sheet of the 2019/2020 school year, Prof Nsata Awoundja, in a keynote presentation, browsed through the ending school year which suffered the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and witnessed an unusual upsurge of violence in schools. Despite this background that could deter the less committed ones, results recorded are praiseworthy.

Pedagogic guidance and follow-up of students, student-teachers, and teachers, as well as the preparation of official exams, were conducted with satisfaction, all but a few hitches and difficulties.

The unexpected shutdown of schools

Notwithstanding the unexpected shutdown of schools on 17 March 2020, as a way to curtail the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, the insufficiency of logistics and infrastructure, the lack of cooperation from principals of some private schools, and delays in collecting data, the IGE was proud with the results attained.

The overall syllabus coverage

In this light, the overall coverage rate of the official syllabus over the said school year stands at 73%, while the hour coverage rate hovers around 89%, and the unconsolidated success rate is 63.35%. These efforts shall be sustained and improved during the 2020/2021 school year.

Distance Education Applauded

In a protocol-free address, the Minister of Secondary Education hailed the results obtained and acknowledged the Distance Education staff for their commitment to salvaging the ending school year. It was equally an opportunity for Prof Nalova Lyonga to thank the Government and all partners for their unrelenting support to the Ministry.

Distance Education with COVID-19-free campuses

To ensure smooth conduct of the 2020/2021 school year with COVID-19-free campuses, Prof Nalova Lyonga disclosed that schools having at most 50 students per class will proceed with the usual class pattern, whereas schools with huge enrollment and fewer facilities will adopt a system of shifts which shall be complemented by Distance Education.

School Shifts Readjusted

Practically, in these schools, classes will be organized in morning and afternoon shifts with distance teaching sessions in-between. This way, students enrolled in the morning shift will continue receiving teachings away from classes in the afternoon and vice versa.

The fight against coronavirus in school premises

In addition, the fight against coronavirus in school premises will be stepped up sustained by the Clean School vision. This justifies the huge consignment of kits, comprising 6 cartons of face masks and 4 cartons of hand sanitizers handed over to each of the ten Regional Delegates of Secondary Education present at the ceremony.

Thanks to these appropriate measures adopted to cope with the current health crisis, the Ministry of Secondary Education is set for a hitch-free back-to-school to come October 5, 2020. Prof Nalova Lyonga invited all the parents to bring their children to school and gave assurance to the “whole population of Cameroon that Cameroon is ready to welcome our children […] and that we [MINESEC] shall not fail the population of Cameroon.”

Back-To-School 2020/2021: School Resumption in a healthy style

A Workshop to Equip and Update School Health Professionals: Mens sana in corpore sano. So is the meaning of the two-day workshop organized by the Ministry of Secondary Education with the support of the Ministry of Public Health at the Teacher’s Resource Centre in Yaounde, from 25 to 26 September 2020.

The workshop aims to build the capacities of school health professionals so as to ensure a 2020/2021 school year void of Covid-19 in the Ministry of Secondary Education. This would be achieved thanks to two steering documents: a Psychopedagogical Support Guide for Students during the 2020/2021 School Year and a Nutritional Education Manual for Secondary School Students. These tools will enable stakeholders in school health to better implement health protocols used in secondary schools against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

During the opening ceremony co-presided at by Prof Nalova Lyonga, Minister of Secondary Education, and Dr Manaouda Malachie, Minister of Public Health, experts from both ministries gave a concise presentation of the documents whose contents will be discussed in-depth during workshops.

Both ministers were satisfied with the manuals produced ahead of school resumption and in response to the prevailing health crisis. They all agreed on the key role played by health and education in the development of a country. More importantly, one can only teach healthy and sound individuals, hence the need to preserve the health of school children.

Building on the aphorism, “I live because I am clean”, Prof Nalova Lyonga commended the support enjoyed from the Ministry of Public Health in improving the living standards within the school milieu. The Minister welcomed the proposal made by the expert from the Ministry of Public Health, to have school canteen operators be delivered certifications in nutrition as a way to ascertain that school children are proposed food items with healthy nutritional contents. The promotion of healthy eating habits in school adds value to the Clean School vision in force in the Ministry of Secondary Education.

As a reminder, this capacity-building workshop is second to a first one organized by the Ministry of Secondary Education, from 10 to 11 September 2020, relating to the practice of extracurricular activities amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
